ASEANSAI Symposium on “Enhancing Public Accountability In ASEAN To Achieve Regional Competitiveness And Prosperity”
A three member delegation from Jabatan Audit Brunei Darussalam headed by Yang Mulia Awang Matali bin Haji Md. Yusof, Acting Deputy Auditor General, and accompanied by Yang Mulia Dayang Norasmah binti Haji Ali, Acting Assistant Auditor General Grade I and Yang Mulia Dayang Hajah Siti Kamariah binti Haji Mohiddin, Acting Assistant Auditor General Grade I, attended the ASEANSAI Symposium on “Enhancing Public Accountability In ASEAN To Achieve Regional Competitiveness And Prosperity” held at Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Jakarta, Indonesia on 9 January 2014.
The Symposium was one of the activities under the ASEANSAI Knowledge Sharing Committee and hosted by Badan Pemeriksa Keuangan, Republic of Indonesia.
The objectives of the Symposium were to develop a consciousness and mutual understanding regarding the importance of accountability, to provide a forum for experience and knowledge sharing regarding problems, solutions and strategy to improve public accountability, and to create an understanding on the role of Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) in improving public accountability and in promoting good governance and clean government.

During the Symposium, Yang Mulia Dayang Norasmah binti Haji Ali presented a paper entitled “Public Accountability In Brunei Darussalam And The Role Of Jabatan Audit In Enhancing It”, in which she shared Public Accountability mechanisms in Brunei Darussalam and the role of Jabatan Audit of Brunei Darussalam in promoting and enhancing Public Accountability in the public sector.

ASEANSAI GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING 6-7 NOVEMBER 2013 BRUNEI DARUSSALAM
The ASEANSAI General Assembly Meeting held on November 6, 2013 in Indera Kayangan Ballroom, Empire Hotel and Country Club Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam was attended by more than 64 delegates which included the Heads of Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) from ASEAN member states as well as observers from the ASEAN Secretariat, International Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions, Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zussammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) and World Bank.
Pengiran Haji Abd Rahman bin Pengiran Haji Mat Salleh, the Auditor General of Jabatan Audit Brunei Darussalam in his welcoming address stated that the national audit institutions in ASEAN member states play an important role in safeguarding stability and prosperity through the enhancement of public accountability and transparency, thus leading to better governance in their respective jurisdictions.
Mr. Hadi Poernomo, the Chairman of ASEANSAI 2011-2013 cum Chairman of the Audit Board of the Republic of Indonesia (BPK RI) in his opening address recalled his two-year tenure as Chairman of ASEANSAI and said that in every meeting attended by members of ASEANSAI, he felt a sense of exceptional togetherness and friendship in the building and development of ASEANSAI.
The meeting was officially opened by Mr. Hadi Poernomo, Chairman of ASEANSAI 2011-2013. The delegates and observers also witnessed the handover of the ASEANSAI chairmanship 2013-2015 by Mr. Hadi Poernomo, the Chairman of Audit Board of the Republic of Indonesia (BPK RI) to Pengiran Haji Abd Rahman bin Pengiran Haji Mat Salleh, the Auditor General of Jabatan Audit Brunei Darussalam. At the same time, Madam Som Kim Suor, the Auditor General of the National Audit Authority of Cambodia, was appointed as the Vice Chairman of ASEANSAI.
Also included in the agenda for the day was the signing of Memorandum of Understanding between ASEANSAI and Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zussammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ), a donor that has placed its support towards ASEANSAI in terms of capacity building programmes, with grants to finance programmes such as training and knowledge sharing activities.
One of the observers that attended the meeting, Mr. AKP Mochtan, Deputy Secretary-General for Community and Corporate Affairs of the ASEAN Secretariat acclaimed that the establishment of ASEANSAI will help to improve the efficiency of the ASEAN Secretariat operation and internal control mechanism. Furthermore, he added that the ASEAN Secretariat looks forward to further collaborations with ASEANSAI to fast-track the goals and ideas of the ASEAN Community
